Copying .VHD/.VHDX file to a USB drive instead of taking snapshot :Hyper-V

hi,

instead of taking snapshot of hyper-v virtual machine can shutdown vm , copy .vhd/.vhdx file usb drive backup , turn on vm later.

thanks

the virtual disks contain 'state' of machine - critical part.

what not have configuration - # of virtual processors, nic, mac address, etc.  perform backup create new vm using copied vhd.

btw - snapshots / checkpoints are not backup.  way return point in time, such prior installing patch or upgrading application.

if have hyper-v 2012 r2 can merge checkpoints live - using capability can create checkpoint, export usb, delete it.  vm running.  , script.
