my plan migrate my old physical 2003 ad dc server on 5 yrs old , not hardware supported new virtual win2k8 r2 ad dc.  physical 2003 server running dns, file , print services , running global catalog server.  since p v not supported, built new virtual win2k8 r2 server, patched it, , promoted dc following microsoft's migration instruction worksheets. verified replicating , looking good. after a few weeks of planning got point needed rename servers , swap ip addresses. renamed old 2003 server , gave different name , ip address, , rebooted. new 2008 server then modified same name , ip old server, rebooted. ok.. looked good. i let go week , decided time demote old physical win2k3 server allow win2k8 r2 dc take over. (i forgot mention fsmo roles are on dc not being modified @ all) i demoted old 2003 dc , completed successfully. required reboot, which i instructed do. (i performed demotion desktop using rdp.) walked down console , noticed that the console still had locked sc

hi, i'm trying forest trust, both 2000 native mode (we can't elevate 2003 functional level reasons), of different organizations. domain "domainb.net", , other domain "domain" (without tld). i'm having problems doing forest trust. other part doesn't have problems. both put forwarders in our dns, have error when starts forest trust wizard. put dns of "domain" (putting "domain" simply), , fails ... seems can't resolve name of domain. if ping controller_domain_name_of_other_domain.domain, resolves (thanks putting forwarder in dns). there problem domain without tld? if telnet controller_domain_name_of_other_domain 53, connects. if ping "domainb.net", resolves, if ping "domain" doesn't resolves. thanks beforehand.   cheers... you need @ forest functional level 2003 before can implement cross forest trust.  if have stay @ 2000 functional level limited external domain trusts. tony

i have been trying figure out wrong server year. this windows 2003 std sp2 server current updates, running on intel dg35ec core2duo e8400 @ 3.00 ghz, 4 gb of ram , realtek rtl8169 gigabit nic. there's nothing special hardware, has 3 physical sata drives, 2 500 gb drives mirrored inside windows, third 750 gb drive, unmirrored. the server runs small internet mail server running hmailserver, against sql server 2005 enterprise. running assp spam filter, on activestate perl 5.10.1 (multithreaded). runs squirrelmail on iis webmail client (on php 5.2.12). lastly, runs secondary dns, running bind 9.6.1. the server well-sized load, , has sufficient headroom , drive space grow substantially beyond current load. the server run 1 2 weeks consistently, without problems. without warning, in afternoon on weekday (during heaviest load), lock solid: mouse cursor frozen, no drive activity, stopped dead. there never blue screen or indication of kind of error - server stops. when reboot

hi, i have 2 windows 2008 r2 machines each running hyper-v.  on each hyper-v, i've created windows 7 x64 vm.  want able route between these vms.  i have physical switch connecting 2008 r2 machines , have 2 nics each.  so far, i've created external network , internal network on each hyper-v network manager.  internal network on machine #1 192.168.10.0 , internal network on machine #2 10.10.10.0.  set external network on each machine public ips know can ping each other. i installed rras , selected "secure connection between 2 private networks" @ setup.  under ipv4 directory in rras console, set static route on machine #1 destination 10.10.10.0, network mask 255.255.255.0 , gateway public ip of external network of machine #2 , interface external network of machine #1.  did same on machine #2, vice versa. i realize there's many places go wrong here , expected, did not work.  have tried many combinations of static route configuration no avail.  can advi

hi, have new install of server 2008 r2 on hp proliant dl 320. can access internet, though dismissing warnings, can not run windows updates, activate license, nor run hp updates... it's if cannot data out. we've tried disabling firewall temporarily, changing restrictions on ie, , no joy! other computers, including several windows 7 computers on same network can run updates. suggestions? lewis obn hi, have tried disabling internet explorer enhanced security? it's located in: - administrative tools; - server manager; - security information (just scroll down list); - configure ie esc; - turn off administrators (and users if desired). have dell poweredge r805, optimized virutalization.  has 4 built in nics.  i'm having issues creating virtual network.  can work, but only in ways.  documentation i've found has nice diagrams explain how virtual network works, i've not seen single example includes ip configuration. here's works.     1 nic iscsi netapp filer hosting lun static ip on non-domain network         192.168.18.x     1 nic static ip address admin hosting/parent server on domain network         172.24.0.x i create network 3rd adapter , configuration works.     1 nic set virtual switch      1 virtual nic  (vnic) parent server must disabled, or set dhcp     1 vnic guest server (server 2008 standard) - works either dhcp or static         172.24.0.x if set static ip address on vnic parent server, loose network connectivity guest server.  server shows connectivity limited local , can't connected internet. diagrams found on-line show both admin nic , vnic parent functioning.  not important me sinc

i have dell t310 server 3 500gb disks in raid 5 config. system partition shipped factory size of 40gb , down on 4gb of free space, server running windows server 2008r2 (no sp). adjacent partition system partition, drive d 887gb partition 609gb free. thinking of shrinking drive d 100gb , expanding system partition take advantage of space, possible? server critical server performing many roles, , physical server. volume on server general volume , not dynamic volume far know. when right click on d partition option shrink. thanks am  the server running windows server 2008r2 (no sp). great can without third party utilities, require work (backup , restores), shrink d: drive , extend c: drive. to extend partition need free space next sytem partition you want extend, in case d: drive. since there no free space must make free space via backup , restores data.   for example, if have single drive 2 partitions c: , d: in order you can following.   backup data on d: drive
