Virtual Networking IP Configuration
have dell poweredge r805, optimized virutalization. has 4 built in nics. i'm having issues creating virtual network. can work, but only in ways. documentation i've found has nice diagrams explain how virtual network works, i've not seen single example includes ip configuration.
here's works.
1 nic iscsi netapp filer hosting lun static ip on non-domain network
192.168.18.x
1 nic static ip address admin hosting/parent server on domain network
172.24.0.x
i create network 3rd adapter , configuration works.
1 nic set virtual switch
1 virtual nic (vnic) parent server must disabled, or set dhcp
1 vnic guest server (server 2008 standard) - works either dhcp or static
172.24.0.x
if set static ip address on vnic parent server, loose network connectivity guest server. server shows connectivity limited local , can't connected internet.
diagrams found on-line show both admin nic , vnic parent functioning. not important me since don't anticipate lot of traffic between parent , guests, wished knew doing wrong.

okay - have 4 nics
nic 1 = dedicated iscsi
nic 2 = dedicated management network.
*note - never associate these physical nics virtual switch.
nic 3 = vm traffic
nic 4 = vm traffic
create external virtual network , associate either nic 3 or nic 4
*note - 1 physical nic 1 virtual switch.
when create external virtual switch physical nic dedicated virtual switch (in network connections) - not modify physical nic in network connections - virtual switch protocol should assigned.
and, hyper-v creates new virtual nic , attaches host same switch.
lets call nic 3 switch
it virtual nic of parent attached nic 3 switch want disable.
i mention bit here: http://itproctology.blogspot.com/2008/12/dedicating-physical-nic-for-management.html
now nic 3 needs physically attached lan.
and vms attach nic 3 switch on whatever physical network segment nic 3 patched to.
(this easier think , configure r2 update coming)
