Trying to set up SMTP relay to work with MOODLE

my school district uses moodle our learning management system.  within moodle, there feature called quickmail allows teacher send email through moodle faculty member.  the problem comes when email received.  if use gmail address , go through google's smtp server, no matter email sent by, shows if gmail address sent it.

 i have smtp relay server set on 1 of server 2008 r2 machines now, , use office365 school district.  i have taken time create security group , email address permissions send of users.  after put our smtp relay server information moodle, if email gets sent through quickmail , attempts send out, smtp log on server shows 0 next every single action.  

does have suggestion?  let me know if need more info.
