hello pete,

based on error code , experience, known issue when using window server backup feature backup system partition created oem tools.

you can find first partition oem partition if run "diskpart" in command line, "select disk 0" , "list part".

as know, system partition should marked active windows server backup can read information there. however, when create partition , install operating system oem tools (ex. intel embedded server raid ii) , oem partition created , marked active. cause backup failure. same issue saw in windows vista, poses huge problem in windows server 2008. not break full backups, system state backups.

currently, there no hotfix or official workaround issue.

you may try following steps manually change active partition and check if issue re-occur.

steps:

please open disk management console, find , locate "server manager\storage\disk management" , see partition has been marked active volume. if active volume different volume in install operating system, try changing active volume volume containing operating system using following commands:

1.open command prompt administrator.
2.run diskpart.
3.at diskpart> prompt type "list disk" (without quotations), see disks listed there
4.at diskpart> prompt type "list volume", see volume volume containing operating system
5.at diskpart> prompt type "select disk 0" <enter>.
6.at diskpart> prompt type "select volume 2" <enter> (i assume volume 2 volume containing operating system).
7.at diskpart> prompt type "active" <enter>.

please note: since changing active partition may cause potential problem or result in unbootable system, highly suggested contact manufacturer , work them change active partition. because oem partition may contain useful information (including drivers) boot system.

thank understanding , cooperation.
