SOLUTION - Security Update for Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 (KB2660465) fails to install - error code 0x80070005

since 2012.02.15 - had problem 1 security update - kb2660465 on windows server 2003 r2 sp2 small business edition (but frankly speaking - same windows sever standard edition). couldn't install many times because of windows update error 0x80070005.

firstly - had cleaned windows\softwaredistribution directory - helpfull many windows update errors. no effects. checked bits service status (enabled, automatical), automatical update service (enabled / automatical).

so found topic: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/en/winserversecurity/thread/0283f990-9935-4f3b-906e-31a37385953c

, read guy had same problem kb2660465.

so solution - before installation of kb2660465 - stop indexing service. update installed without problems :-)

funny - other updates - able install without problems during long days problem kb2660465... can tell me why ???

hi,

error code 0x80070005 means permission problem. when problem occurs, update.url file in softwaredistribution folder opened cidaemon.exe indexing service. file locked windows update cannot access it. affects of updates.

to solve problem, can exclude softwaredistribution folder being indexed instead of disabling indexing service.

1. start > run
2. typed in mmc
3. file > add/remove snap-in
4. clicked on add
5. selected indexing service , add > selected “local computer” > finish , close
6. clicked on “add/remove snap-in” ok button
7. expanded “indexing service on local machine” > expanded “system”
8. right clicked on “directories” > “new” > “directory”
9. in path section, clicked on “browse” button , went “c:\windows\softwaredistribution” , clicked ok
10. changed option “included in index” no, clicked on ok.
11. restarted indexing service

hope helps.

regards,
bruce
