windows 2003 server updates could not taken place

are using wsus install updates? if so, please discuss issue in our wsus forum:

otherwise, behavior typically occurs when of following factors true.
1. windows update components missing or corrupted.
2. temporary folder of windows update contains corrupted files.
3. local windows update services have not been configured correctly.
at time, let’s try following steps troubleshoot problem. after finishing each suggestion, please go microsoft windows update site , check result there.
step 1: rename softwaredistribution folder.
===============
1. click start, run, type: cmd , press enter. please run following command in opened window.
net stop wuauserv
2. click start, run, type: %windir% , press enter.
3. in opened folder, rename folder softwaredistribution sdold.
4. click start, run, type: cmd , press enter. please run following command in opened window.
net start wuauserv
step 2: rename catroot2 folder.
===============
1. close open windows.
2. click start->run, type: %windir% , press enter.
3. locate , open system32 folder.
4. find catroot2 folder, right-click on it, , select rename. change name cr2old. make sure press enter after typing in new name, changes executed.
5. close window.
6. go microsoft windows update website , check result there.
step 3: re-register windows update components

note: there single space between regsvr32 command , file name
jscript.dll . same goes commands provided below.
1. click on start, point "run"
2. type in "regsvr32 jscript.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
3. type in "regsvr32 msxml3.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
4. type in "regsvr32 atl.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
5. type in "regsvr32 wuapi.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
6. type in "regsvr32 wuaueng.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
7. type in "regsvr32 wuaueng1.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
8. type in "regsvr32 wucltui.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
9. type in "regsvr32 wups.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
10. type in "regsvr32 wuweb.dll" (without double quotes) , click ok.
after trying above steps, let’s try access windows update site again.
step 4: check local windows update services
===============
1. click start->run, type "services.msc" (without quotation marks) in open box , click ok.
2. double click service "automatic updates".
3. click on tab "general "; make sure "startup type" "automatic". please click button "start" under "service status" start service.
4. please repeat above steps service: background intelligent transfer service (bits)
however, if issue persists, please gather following information further research.

2. when error message or error code appears, press print screen (pr scrn) (next f12 button) capture screen shot.
3. start, go run, type "mspaint" (without quotation marks) in open box, , click ok.
4. use ctrl + v paste screen shot canvas.
5. file menu, go save , save jpg file.
how collect system information:

1. click start, run , type in msinfo32. press ok.
2. on popup window, on menu bar, click action, click “save system information”, click "desktop" on left pane, , type "nfo" file name.
how collect windows update log file:
===============
note: there 2 windows update log files similar names, using "windowsupdate.log" file without space in middle of name.
1. click on start, run , type "windowsupdate.log" (without quotes)
2. click on ok button. see file named "windowsupdate.log"
3. click on "file" menu , click on "save as" , select "desktop" in "save in" option on top of window.
4. click on save button. file saved desktop.
