Disk Read Error!

i know there few forums this, need help, it's way more stuffed started out be.

ok, earlier today got windows xp professional x64.
i tried first installing on brothers computer (previously had windows 7 x64 installed). brother backed-up needed, restarted computer, hit enter on boot disk option, waited load, selected install, deleted previous partition, , made clean install on new partition. installation fine. once had finished, computer restarted (as normal) once got boot disk command, read "disk read error", though still boot disk, making possible re-do again (fresh install, , whatever) repair. first off tried repair, had never tried repairing computer before, had never needed to, left not knowing ____ had in command menu.
so restarted computer, done fresh install half several times, every time disk boot error appeared. came onto computer (the 1 i'm using right now) , searched error, , found site. though looking through old threads (not realising) , tried out of things other people have suggested.
so did change jumpers @ of hard drive , dvd drive, setting hard drive master , dvd drive slave. turned computer on, same thing happened. moved them around little bit, hoping make difference. still no change.
i'm not sure triggered this, next time turned computer on, came same error, modified, saying "disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter". figured meant system disk windows xp disk (probably not disk), tried that, no change, tried disk, still no change.
i read other suggestions, said may ide/sata cable, changed ide cable new one, still comes same error.

can please help! hope didn't make worse :(

edit: forgot mention computer not reading dvd drive longer. when got bios, shows hdd hooked master , nothing else :s
