2008 Server SP2 Stopped detecting USB Hard Drives - Can't Backup

i have problem 2008 server dc has stopped recognizing it's usb backup drives. we have 6 usb hdds rotate daily, , has been working great since installation last year.

the system no longer recognizes usb mass storage device. in device manager, under usb controllers, entry unknown device. true every usb msd try on machine.

three of drives use bus powered, other 3 fed external power supply, , exhibit same issue, , drives work on other pcs, know there not issues drives themselves.

in troubleshooting, found if manually uninstall unknown device, followed usb root hubs, , intel usb controllers, , run hardware detection, after devices have been reinstalled, usb msd present. unfortunately, lasts long drive connected. moment dismount drive , disconnect, drive cannot reconnected without error appearing.

installing latest usb drivers intel chipset has not helped.

this server distant location, onsite troubleshooting not practical. rdp real channel of communication @ moment. hope case of win2k8 being pesky , strictly software fix.

your advice appreciated.  thanks in advance!

hi,

first of all, after finish steps (uninstall unknown device etc), have tried connect 1 of usb disks see if keep working after reboot? usb related issues caused power supply there many devices connected.

if issue not related power, redo uninstall steps, instead of clicking "hardware detection", steps below clear more information in registry keys:

hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/enum/usbstor, right-click on "usbstor" , choose delete.

hkey_local_machine/system/currentcontrolset/enum/usb, highlight , delete vid_.... entries. if there usb keyboard or mouse, not remove vid entry these devices, otherwise, windows may not restart correctly.

note: please export keys before deleting. may need set permission on entries delete entries.

reboot see result.
