Private Cloud Computing

hello all,

i hope asking question @ right place.

i interested in setting private cloud in our university labs using windows 2008 server r2.

university purchased specific os - not own hpc server 2008 r2.

i have read os supports live migration (with hyper - v), between 2 head nodes of cluster and led me question.

assuming setup infrastructure of 8 compute nodes connected 2 head nodes in order to

run cloud scenario our diploma:

does  hyper-v of server 2008 r2support migration of vms of 8 nodes depending on load of nodes?

does dynamically allocate , deallocate vms node (or custom policies) when new job started/finished?

if not case, please advise me os or add on should use in order run scenario ?

e.g. hpc server edition this? add on 2008 server (except hpc pack) ?

thanks in advance

hi faidon.

let straight:

if intend run failover clustering in windows server 2008 r2, need enterprise or datacenter edition of windows server 2008 r2. in addition, achieve ha onlye hyper-v 2008 r2 server (a core version of windows server 2008 r2 hyper-v role , no graphical user interface)

in order use live migration successfully, must ensure windows server 2008 r2 hyper-v failover cluster meets following requirements:

  • hyper-v failover cluster nodes must use processors same manufacturer , of same type. therefore, cannot use live migration move virtual machine running on amd-v platform intel vt platform.
  • hyper-v failover cluster nodes must configured on same tcp/ip subnet. although windows server 2008 , windows server 2008 r2 failover cluster feature not require cluster nodes configured on same tcp/ip subnet, required configuration use live migration.
  • hyper-v failover cluster nodes must have access shared storage. shared storage options same ones supported in windows server 2008 hyper-v, , include iscsi-based devices storage area network (san) devices.
  • enable csv feature
  • the vms can failover of nodes in cluster long requirements met

a live migration of virtual machine can started windows server 2008 r2 failover cluster manager or through system center virtual machine manager 2008 r2 if used manage failover cluster nodes. can initiate live migration using windows management instrumentation (wmi) or powershell script.

it possible select preferred nodes vm in failover cluster manager. intelligent placement, have combine 2 nice products, scom , scvmm.

regards,

kristian
