this first time using windows deployment server running on server 2008.

i have a server 2003 build want image have created capture image, based on longhorn x86

it pxe boots ok fails see the  drive start image process. assume driver problem.

so have download driver sas card 5/ir dell 32bit server 2008 version.

i have injected driver, mounting image, injecting *.inf driver folder and unmounting whilst commiting.

i have re added image in wds , still cannot see hard drives when boot capture image.

has else had problem? can help?

hi martin,

are unable see volume contains image when using image capture wizard create custom image?

if so, there 2 common reasons problem:

cause 1: boot image not contain proper drivers computer’s hard disk drive controller.

to troubleshoot this, when image capture wizard first starts, press shift+f10 open command prompt. run diskpart, , run lis disk. select each disk (for example, sel dis 0 , sel dis 1), , type lis vol list each volume. ensure volume contains offline sysprep image viewable. if not, need add driver mass-storage controller windows pe can detect local disk contains offline sysprep image. this, use 1 of following procedures:

to inject drivers boot image, , use boot image create capture image:

1.    add boot image server.

2.    mark image offline (disabled).

3.    mount image using imagex , mountrw (included in windows aik).

4.    insert of drivers use peimg.exe boot image.

5.    mark image online (enabled).

6.    create capture image using boot image.

to load driver in windows pe:

1.    boot capture image.

2.    press shift+f10 access command prompt.

3.    use drvload.exe load driver.

4.    confirm have access local disk contains offline image.

5.    press alt+tab return capture wizard , continue process.

cause 2: volume not contain image prepared using sysprep.

to determine whether offline image has been prepared using sysprep:

1.    run regedit load offline system hive.

2.    in hkey_local_machine\system, create new key called test.

3.    import offline system hive c:\windows\system32\config\system (assuming offline operating system located on c:\) empty test key.

4.    examine 2 registry keys in imported system hive checked wizard:

ensure hkey_local_machine\system\setup\clonetag exists

ensure hkey_local_machine\system\setup\systemsetupinprogress set 1.

if either of registry keys not set correctly, there 2 causes:

the generalize check box not selected when sysprepwas run.

after sysprep completed, computer specialized before image capture wizard started. can happen if installed windows vista, ran sysprep, rebooted computer, , failed signal pxe boot in time computer starts boot , specialization process runs. realized mistake, restarted computer, , signaled pxe boot. booted windows pe , start image capture wizard. in scenario, wizard not show volume because offline image no longer generalized.

to resolve either of these, boot image, run sysprep again, , perform capture process again.

hope helps.
