Windows 2008, Windows XP and VPN (join domain, browse network, ping FQDN)

here situation.

hq office have windows 2008 server.  10 computers in office , on active directory.  no issues there.  server ip of 192.168.0.250.

remote office a.  3 computers.  have persistent vpn connection hq office (netgear routers).  while can map drives using \\192.168.0.250, first, i'm unable map drives using \\server (to shared folders).  cannot ping fqdn, ip address.  second, i'm unable join remote office computers domain domain_name or domain_name.local (did not try join domain via ip address).

computers in remote office have dns directly server (192.168.0.250) (and dns local router too).

should setup wins on server accept netbios names , such vpn'ed computers remote?  how can them join domain , able browse network via network places, ping fqdn , such?

thanks in advance,

steve

hi tiger,

sorry delay.  disabled offline file feature , removed entry host file (192.168.0.250    server.dignity.local).

i can still ping server name or ip address (but not fqdn).  i can still \\server , shared folders.

here's interesting:

on remote computer, changed domain dns suffix dignity.local, rebooted computer (keep in mind, computer still in workgroup).  went add domain (dignity.local) , prompted me username/password - put administrator credentials in.  praying join domain then...but got this:

the following error occured attempting join domain "dignity.local"

the network path not found

i'm not sure what's next.  still can't computer join domain.

thanks continued help...

steve

i got computer join domain.  network path not found triggered in head...who knows....but turned off firewall on remote computer - tried join domain , worked now.

looks needed add domain dns suffix , turn off firewall (probably not best solution turn off/disable firewall, @ point, don't want spend time tinkering w/the firewall settings...just turn off....all together).
