certifcate auto-renewal?

hello, please explain processs 2008 servers update computer certificate internal ca?

on 6/10 discovered our 2003 sp2 enterprise internal ca's root cert going expire on 6/16. renewed using same key.

since users , computers have been getting updated certs expiration dates year in future.

what process 2008 server gets updated cert? have tried rebooting, gpupdate, manaully running "certificateservicesclient" system task nothing happens. have had handful of 2008 servers update im unsure how. our few 2003 servers seemed update whereas few 2008 servers have.
